Mazatlan

Colorful Sculpture outside of my favorite Gallery in Mazatlan

Today is February the 6th. As you can tell, my two weeks estimation for being here was a little off. But that’s not unusual to make a plan and to have it morph into something else when you’re cruising.

Rick and Harley off to go fishing out by the Islands

So since we have been here, we have gone to the usual haunts…Fat Fish, Looney Bean, Rico’s, Pedro y Lola’s, La Mona, the ‘Market’,  and a taco stand here and there. But we discovered a new place to eat near Plaza Machado in Old Mazatlan called Sefe’s. They have the best Torta’s in town. The owner and chef was very sweet. So kind and conscientious. I had a smoked Marlin sandwich drizzled with Jalapeno sauce made on a fresh baked roll. I actually discovered this place while on an Art walk with Liza (Peter’s crew). I had to use a restroom and as we walked by Sefe’s I asked if I could use theirs. Sefe, the owner, was a little hesitant, but nodded with approval. On my way to the bathroom, I had to walk through the kitchen. I noticed the kitchen was immaculate and the food they were preparing was making my mouth water. So as I was on my way out, feeling a little guilty that I wasn’t purchasing anything, I asked Liza if she wanted to maybe split a Torta. She agreed and that’s when I discovered the best tasting sandwich I’d ever had in my life! I liked it so much, I dragged Rick & Peter & Liza back to the same place the following day for lunch. The owner was delighted to see us and delivered another delicious meal and made us feel at home. Sefe told me that he was very happy that I came in the day before to use his restroom.  Me too!

Our friend Larry came by for a visit (Harley's new favorite person!)

Walking from Old Town towards the Malecon

Not only have we been eating well, we have been getting things done on the boat. Rick received the part he’d been waiting for ( the plate for the winch motor) and installed that successfully. It is now up and running! I was able to work on and get out two blogs posts, Harley got lots of walks, we walked into Old Town a couple of times and along the Malecon, taking in the sights and the perfect sunsets. And we took a couple  dinghy rides around the Mangroves close to the Marina. Rick fished a few mornings out by the Islands in the dinghy.  Unfortunately, he didn’t catch any fish. Another new discovery, was finding an Organic Farmer’s Market and an Art Walk in Old Town!

The Salvation Orphanage put on a production at our Marina one day!

Such talented and sweet kiddos!

Shopping at the Market

One day while Rick was working on the engine, the fresh water pump broke. So…this involved ordering a new one from the states. Another set back. So while we had to stick around here for another week or so, we decided to have our boat cushions recovered…as long as they could be done by the time we needed to leave. Ruben, the canvas guy, did not disappoint! He did all of our cushions in the time frame we wanted and he did an excellent job! Since he did such a nice job, we added our V-Berth to our list. This is now what we are waiting on. We originally wanted to leave yesterday but the cushions will not be done until this afternoon. With Ruben’s track record so far, I’m pretty sure he will be getting our cushions back as promised.

Our friend Peter and his crew, Liza on SV Jugete arrived  a few days after we did.  It’s been fun being with them and showing them around Mazatlan.

Last night, we shared a filet of fresh Yellowfin Tuna that we got straight from some fisherman off the docks here. We had a little sushi making party on our boat. Peter had all the fixings to make sushi rolls….the sticky rice, the seaweed, the bamboo for rolling etc.  It was lots of fun and the sushi was incredible! Such a treat!

Today, will be our last day here. We are pretty much ready to go. Already made a quick trip for a few last provisions and walked over to the Marina’s Beach Club and swam in the pool that is right off the beach and also swam in the ocean! The ocean was much warmer than the swimming pool. So we spent most of our time body surfing. I’m just sorry we hadn’t hit the Beach Club more often during our stay here.

We leave bright and early tomorrow and will head straight for San Blas. Peter and Liza are heading out as well. We hope to buddy boat with them over the next couple of months to Barra de Navidad. From there we will be going our separate ways. Peter will turn around and head North and we plan on heading South.
